My Thoughts on the New Apple Updates

Today Apple updated the Mac Pro, iMac, and introduced a couple new products. The Mac Pro got speed bumps on the four and eight core models, and they also added a 12 core option. It also now has options for solid-state drives. They also upgraded the graphics cards to the 5770 and the 5870. Unfortunately the base model still comes with only 3 GB of RAM. I think for the price they charge they should give you a little more RAM than that.

The Core 2 Duo processors in the iMacs were replaced with i3s, and they all got dedicated graphics cards. The bottom of the line one has the 4670 now, the two middle ones have the 5670, and the top of the line model has the 5750. This is probably the best thing they released today, it’s nice that they all have dedicated graphics now.

Apple introduced a 27″ Cinema Display today with the same specs as the 27″ iMac screen. It’s less of a rip-off than the old 30″ one, this one is $1000 instead of $1800. I still don’t think I would buy one. I couldn’t spend $1000 on a monitor.

They introduced the Magic Trackpad today, which is just like the MacBook Pro trackpad but it’s bluetooth and is bigger. Same price as the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. Overpriced by about $30.

I don’t really think today’s updates are really anything that great. Pretty good news for hackintosh users though, because now the i3 is supported by the vanilla kernel (I assume it wasn’t before) and we should have support for ATI 5xxx series graphics cards now.
